One X-ray predicts MACE risk; steroids reduce pain, increase damage in knee osteoarthritis

Dec. 2, 2022
By Mark McCarty
The ability to inexpensively predict events such as stroke and heart attack is something of a holy grail for cardiologists, and a new study presented at this year’s annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North American (RSNA) provides just that capability. A study of an algorithm developed to examine a single chest X-ray suggests that the data generated by the algorithm can be as effective in establishing the patient’s risk of these events as a standard approach that relies on information that isn’t always readily available to the clinician.

SynB1-ELP-p50i NF-κB inhibitor peptide reduces infarct volume in MCAO model

Dec. 1, 2022
Ischemic stroke comprises about 87% of stroke incidence. The nuclear factor κ B (NF-κB) cascade is a major regulatory pathway of inflammation and is activated in response to ischemic stroke in humans and in rodents during middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO).

Baxdrostat phase II Halo tarnished, but Cincor forging ahead in hypertension

Nov. 28, 2022
By Randy Osborne
Shares of Cincor Pharma Inc. (NASDAQ:CINC) took a serious hit on top-line findings from the completed phase II Halo study with once-daily oral baxdrostat, but the clinical program with the aldosterone synthase inhibitor remains on track, and an NDA submission is targeted for 2025. The stock closed at $14.11, down $12.42, or 46.8% after Waltham, Mass.-based Cincor informed Wall Street that results from Halo, which enrolled patients taking as many as two blood pressure medications at the maximally tolerated doses without satisfactory results, missed statistical significance on its primary endpoint evaluating change from baseline in mean seated systolic blood pressure in the intent-to-treat population, which included 249 patients.

BAZ1A-AS1 behind neointima formation after saphenous vein graft disease

Nov. 21, 2022
Noncoding RNAs, such as long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), are important regulators and markers of cardiovascular diseases. Saphenous veins are frequently used in coronary artery bypass surgery, but about 50% of the saphenous vein grafts fail in the first 10 years after surgery due to neointima formation.

Lower ApoJ-Glyc levels found in patients with ischemia

Nov. 15, 2022
Recent findings have suggested glycosylated apolipoprotein J (ApoJ-Glyc) levels to be a marker for the diagnosis of myocardial ischemia. Analysis of this marker was performed in a cohort of patients with chest pain suggestive of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) (N=404). ApoJ-Glyc serum levels were analyzed with a novel ELISA assay that targets a specific glycosylated variant of ApoJ (ApoJ-GlycA6). It was found that 291 patients were diagnosed as having a nonischemic event, while 113 were classified as having an ischemic event, 33 as STEMI, 48 as non-STEMI, 27 as unstable angina pectoris and 5 as unclassifiable ACS patients.

MMP-targeting VS-041 shows promise for improving cardiac function in HFpEF patients

Nov. 14, 2022
Increased expression and elevated levels of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 play a role in impaired cardiac function. These MMPs make for essential targets in the treatment of heart failure, specifically heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).
