Enterochromaffin (EC)-derived serotonin is released in response to gut contraction and enhances gut motility. Piezo type mechanosensitive ion channel component 2 (Piezo2) is a nonselective cationic ion channel recently identified as an important mechanosensor in mouse EC cells, and its role in gut motility was investigated in vivo.
