Flagship-backed Generate Bio pulls in $273M, one of 2023’s top VC rounds

With one program in the clinic and another not far behind, Generate Biomedicines Inc. raised $273 million in a series C financing to advance its generative biology platform. It is one of the largest venture capital (VC) rounds for a U.S. company in 2023. Funds will go toward advancing the Somerville, Mass.-based company’s 17 pipeline programs, including the filing of multiple IND applications in 2024.

Star Therapeutics Inc. brought on board six new investors in its oversubscribed $90 million series C round, raising the company’s total funding to more than $190 million since its founding in 2018 to advance in-house drug discovery efforts via formation of portfolio companies. Since emerging from stealth in early 2022, Star has launched two aptly named companies, Electra Therapeutics Inc. and Vega Therapeutics Inc., with plans to unveil additional ventures arising from its antibody discovery efforts.

Boryung invests $60M in Axiom for R&D station in space

Seoul, South Korea-headquartered Boryung Co. Ltd. grabbed headlines in 2022 with its strategic redesign to move beyond drug development, announcing that it would invest $10 million in Axiom Space Inc. for a 0.4% stake in the U.S. commercial space station developer. The investment ramped up over the course of a year, with Boryung pouring a total of $60 million into Axiom Space over two financing rounds for a 2.7% stake. Axiom is set to build the world’s first commercial space station.

Having banked almost $775 million since its inception in 2019, Eikon Therapeutics Inc. closed three transactions to beef up its pipeline and raised nearly $106 million in a series C round. And the dealmaking will continue, said Alfred Bowie, chief financial officer. “We still have well over a half-billion in cash on our balance sheet,” he told BioWorld. “We’re active.” The new funds “add more fuel to the fire,” and let the company “make sure we aren’t cannibalizing some of the funding we’ve raised to help push forward the internal pipeline,” which is “advancing very nicely.”

Alentis expanding Claudin-1 biology with $105M series C

Alentis Therapeutics SA has closed a $105 million series C round which will fund simultaneous phase II and phase Ib trials of anti-Claudin-1 antibodies in the treatment of organ fibrosis and phase I development in fibrosis-associated cancers. At the same time, the company will extend the reach of its Claudin-1 biology into antibody-drug conjugates and bispecific constructs, to further exploit the role of the transmembrane protein in maintaining cellular integrity and controlling cell-to-cell signaling.

New drug technology may soon deliver a breakthrough to eliminate internal bleeding caused by drug overuse. Shaanxi Micot Technology Co. Ltd.’s MT-1011 is a synthetic water-soluble small-molecule anticoagulant antagonist. After a single intravenous dose, it can bind directly to other anticoagulants to stop anticoagulant effects and restore the clotting function. Data from clinical trials support its mechanism.
