Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms for use in medical radiology have made tremendous inroads into clinical practice, but one of the key stakeholder groups, physicians, aren’t always persuaded of the benefits of these software products. In this second installment of a six-part series, BioWorld asked Bibb Allen, Jr., chief medical officer for the Data Science Institute of the American College of Radiology, what physicians want, and what physicians see as a trend toward me-too AI.

Glympse Bio Inc.’s diagnostic platform has demonstrated the ability to detect hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in blood, offering a non-invasive method for diagnosing the disease much earlier and more reliably than current approaches. The platform uses biosensors and machine learning to measure protease activity in plasma samples. Details of studies demonstrating the system’s accuracy in HCC will be presented at the International Liver Conference 2022 in London.

Health Canada approved a device which Wayne, Pa.-based Teleflex Inc. described as the first commercially available biomechanical vascular device designed to close large holes in the femoral artery during endovascular catheterization procedures.

Bright Uro Inc. has emerged from stealth mode with $4 million in seed financing from Academy Investor Network, Fred Moll and several other angel investors. The company also secured a $2 million phase II small business innovation research (SBIR) grant from the NIH.

Oncologica Ltd. is expanding its testing service to include an at-home molecular immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody allergy test. The Cambridge, U.K.-based precision medicine company said the new Allergyfocus test can detect 99% of globally known allergens from a finger prick blood sample. The IgE test provides a personalized antibody profile of allergy triggers such as different foods, pollen, mould or animals.
