Nearly a year and a half after Francis Collins stepped down as director of the U.S. NIH, President Joe Biden announced May 15 his intent to nominate Monica Bertagnolli as the next NIH director.
Investigators have identified a second individual who remained cognitively normal into his late 60s despite having the PSEN1 E280A mutation, which causes a familial version of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The likely source of protection, a mutation in a gene called Reelin, is distinct from the protective mechanism identified in the first case of an individual who was protected from the effects of PSEN1 E280A. That case was reported in 2019.
Med-tech financings have continued to decline from 2021's peak when they brought in a combined total of $27.76 billion through April. In the first four months of 2022, that dropped 61.74% to $10.62 billion and this year they have fallen 44.16% to $5.93 billion. Broken out by type of financing, med-tech follow-ons are higher than the same period last year ($2.6 billion in early 2023 vs. $1.73 billion through April of last year).
Centricity Vision Inc. received U.S. FDA clearance for technology designed to integrate with modern phacoemulsification or “phaco” systems that use ultrasound energy to emulsify the eye's native internal lens during cataract surgery. Centricity’s new Zeptolink interocular lens (IOL) positioning system is used in conjunction with phaco systems to surgically remove the natural lens of the eye as the first step in cataract surgery.
