More than doubling the amount raised by this point last month, med-tech financings are coming out strong in 2021, beating by 67% the early months of last year. The full year of 2020 broke med-tech financings records, reaching $59.7 billion. With $10.63 billion already raised this year, 2021 is well on its way to at least match last year’s amount.
Entering 2021 with a strong reputation following a year of intense pandemic-related research, the biopharma industry is drawing enormous investor interest as financings continue to shoot skyward.
With several more emergency use authorizations (EUAs) across the globe, COVID-19 efforts to flatten the emerging variants with cocktail therapies and tweaked vaccines are frantically underway. BioWorld has tracked 884 therapeutics and vaccines that have entered development for the deadly SARS-CoV-2 virus since it first emerged more than a year ago, and the U.S. government has now provided EUAs to three vaccines and six therapies.
Without any mega-mergers completed in the first two months of 2021, M&A values have significantly plummeted from those recorded in each of the last two years, although both deals and M&As in January and February are tracking similarly to prior years in terms of volume.
While the new year has recorded a similar number of completed med-tech deals and M&As in comparison with the early months of 2020, the projected values of those transactions are up by 78% and 418%, respectively. Through this week, BioWorld has tracked 204 deals worth $144.65 million, and 62 M&As completed and valued at $12.8 billion, for the first months of 2021.
BioWorld tracked a total of 295 phase I, II and III clinical news items in January, a rise of 39% compared with the number recorded during the pre-pandemic month of January 2020.
January is historically the weakest month of the year for FDA approvals and 2021 is following that trend. With only nine approvals tracked by BioWorld during the month, it falls short of the 12 approvals during the same month in 2020, and it is the lowest amount in a single month since January of 2019, which also recorded nine.
