Resapp’s stand-alone cough counter app cleared in Australia and Europe

PERTH, Australia – Australian digital health company Resapp Health Ltd. received clearance from Australia’s Therapeutics Good Administration and CE mark certification in the EU for its stand-alone cough counter application that tracks cough frequency using a smartphone. The class I software as a medical device is the first regulatory approval for such an application, which uses Resapp’s machine learning algorithms to identify cough events from audio recorded using the smartphone’s in-built microphone.

Inventia raises A$35M to bring its 3D cell culture platform to US

PERTH, Australia – Inventia Life Science Pty. Ltd. closed a A$35m (US$25 million) series B round that will see the company bring its Rastrum 3D cell culture platform to the U.S. market. The technology can “revolutionize the way drug discovery is done,” Inventia Founder and CEO Julio Ribeiro told BioWorld.

PERTH, Australia – The FDA has given the green light to Telix Pharmaceuticals Ltd.’s lead radiopharmaceutical imaging agent, Illuccix, for prostate cancer. Illuccix is a kit for the preparation of gallium-68 (68Ga) prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) 11 for imaging prostate cancer with positron emission tomography (PET). It targets PSMA, a protein that is overexpressed on the surface of more than 90% of primary and metastatic prostate cancer cells.

Researchers discover more than 1,300 genes linked to congenital heart disease

Researchers from Monash University in Melbourne have developed a method for determining which genes are "in play" in causing cardiac abnormalities, and the technique not only confirmed well-known congenital heart disease genes, but also discovered 35 new genes not previously suspected in the disease.

The company’s stock dropped 17% on the news that Novartis AG will terminate its licensing agreement with Mesoblast for remestemcel-L. The decision puts an end to an exclusive global licensing deal Mesoblast inked with Novartis in November 2020 for the development, manufacture and commercialization of the mesenchymal stromal cell product, with an initial focus on acute respiratory distress syndrome, including that associated with COVID-19.

PERTH, Australia – Australia attracted international attention in July when a Federal Court ruled that artificial intelligence can be named as the inventor of a patent. In Thaler v. Commissioner of Patents, Federal Court Justice Jonathan Beach ruled that under Australian patent law, inventors don’t necessarily have to be human. The decision challenges the assumption that only human beings can be inventors. Beach did rule, however, that an AI system cannot apply for a patent or receive a patent.

PERTH, Australia – In the second multi-billion-dollar pharma merger this week, CSL Ltd. has announced plans to buy Vifor Pharma Ltd. for an equity value of $11.7 billion. It’s also the second largest biopharma merger of 2021, a whisker above Merck & Co Inc.’s $11.5 billion acquisition of Acceleron Pharma Inc. in November, although way off Astrazeneca plc’s $39 billion buy of Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc. in July.
