• Aetna (Hartford, Connecticut) has named Anne Beal, MD, as head of the Aetna Foundation, the independent charitable and philanthropic arm of Aetna. Beal joins Aetna from The Commonwealth Fund, where she directed the Fund's program to improve health care quality for low-income and minority patient populations. The Aetna Foundation seeks to help build healthy communities by funding initiatives that improve the quality of life where employees and customers live and work.

Rebecca Garcia, PhD, has been named chief prevention officer of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT; Austin). Garcia has worked in healthcare and medical education for over 20 years. Her current role is VP, continuing professional development, for Physicians' Education Resource. CPRIT received an appropriation of $450 million dollars from the 81st Texas Legislature for the next two years to fund grants for cancer research and prevention to expedite innovation in cancer treatment and expand cancer prevention and treatment capabilities.

• DaVita (Denver) said that Mahesh Krishnan, MD, has been named to DaVita Clinical Research VP for Research. Previously, Krishnan was the executive director of medical policy, nephrology therapeutic area head for global health economics and global development leader for Epogen at Amgen. DaVita Clinical Research specializes in clinical trials for drugs and devices.

Sharon Muscarella has been named senior VP of sales and chief marketing officer for United Concordia (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania). Previously, Muscarella worked at Amerigroup, where she had national responsibility for provider networks, establishing corporate protocols, network development in expansion markets, medical earnings improvements initiatives and overseeing new and renewal contracts for hospitals, physicians and ancillary providers in existing health plans. United Concordia is a dental insurer.
