Aspen’s series A points its Parkinson’s therapy toward the clinic

May 9, 2022
By Lee Landenberger
Aspen Neuroscience Inc. has closed a series B financing of $147.5 million. The funds will help get its autologous neuron replacement candidate into a phase I/IIa study for Parkinson’s disease. Privately held Aspen has been talking about initiating the phase I/IIa clinical trial since at least 2019. But in April 2022, it came a lot closer to reality. That’s when the company launched its first patient screening studies at several sites in the U.S. Now, the trial-ready cohort study is designed to screen potential participants for the study.

FDA approval stimulates Boston Scientific’s Neural Navigator

April 12, 2022
By Annette Boyle
Boston Scientific Corp.’s image-guided programming software, Vercise Neural Navigator with Stimview XT, got the green light from the FDA for use with the company’s deep brain stimulation (DBS) portfolio in patients with essential tremor or Parkinson’s disease. The software, developed in a collaboration with Brainlab AG, provides more sophisticated image-guided programming tools for personalization of the stimulation therapy, halving the time needed for adjustments and increasing precision.

Novel metabolic biomarker predicts Parkinson’s disease from an early stage

March 31, 2022
By Bernard Banga
A research team from the Grenoble Institute for Neuroscience (GIN) recently discovered a blood biomarker capable of detecting the onset of Parkinson's disease (PD) from a very early stage. This discovery represents the findings of a multi-model, translational study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

AC Immune reports images of alpha-synuclein in human brain using new PET tracer

March 17, 2022
By Catherine Longworth
At the AD/PD 2022 international conference on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases, AC Immune SA presented images showing its positron emission tomography (PET) tracer detecting pathological alpha-synuclein (a-syn) in human subjects’ brains. The abnormal accumulation of a-syn, a natively unfolded and soluble presynaptic protein, is a neuropathological feature of neurodegenerative disorders.

Sio Gene drops a program and its CEO

Feb. 1, 2022
By Lee Landenberger
Sio Gene Therapies Inc. is retrenching the business as it terminated the company’s AXO-Lenti-PD license agreement with Oxford Biomedica plc for treating Parkinson’s disease. Also, Sio’s CEO, Pavan Cheruvu, is leaving the company. Sio said it is deprioritizing its Parkinson’s disease program due to several factors, including resource requirements and development timelines “to reach meaningful value inflection for the program and an increasingly challenging market and regulatory environment” for the indication.

Big pharma puts bets on alpha-synuclein in Parkinson’s – but will they pay off?

Jan. 28, 2022
By Richard Staines
Several pharma companies think that targeting a rogue protein known as alpha-synuclein could be the key to halting or reversing neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease – but has the industry learned from a string of failures in Alzheimer’s? In the space of a few weeks, Novartis AG and Sanofi AS have signed major deals for molecules targeting misfolded alpha-synuclein, the rogue protein thought to be the root cause of Parkinson’s disease.

Sanofi in-licenses ABL Bio Parkinson’s drug for $1B as alpha-synuclein research heats up

Jan. 18, 2022
By Richard Staines
Targeting the toxic alpha-synuclein protein found in the brains of people with Parkinson’s is one of the most promising approaches to treat the disease in the clinic – but getting any drug into the brain is a challenge. Sanofi SA has joined with ABL Bio Inc. to solve this problem, in-licensing ABL-301, a preclinical bispecific antibody that locks on to misfolded alpha-synuclein but also includes a molecular “shuttle” that allows it to penetrate the blood-brain barrier.
