Two companies with European ties signed billion-dollar deals with large pharma firms in the last two days to discover and develop molecular glue drugs, as well as to advance a preclinical Alzheimer’s disease prospect. For both companies, the up-front payments are relatively small, only $10 million for Alzecure Pharma AB, and just $40 million for Orionis Biosciences Inc. But it’s the back-end milestone amounts that are headline-grabbing.

EMA poised to be 4th regulator approving Boehringer’s Jascayd lung drug

As generic versions of its blockbuster drug Ofev (nintedanib) start to hit the market, Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH looks to have swerved the patent cliff, with European and Japanese regulators both approving a potential replacement, Jascayd (nerandomilast), this week. At its monthly meeting, the EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use also recommended Novartis AG’s Vijoice (alpelisib) be given conditional approval in the treatment of PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum disorders.

Relay’s zovegalisib hits in phase II vascular anomalies trial

Showing a significant efficacy signal in a phase II trial, Relay Therapeutics Inc.’s zovegalisib (RLY-2608) achieved a 60% volumetric response in patients with PIK3CA-driven vascular anomalies (VAs). The isoform-selective PI3Ka inhibitor is in late-stage clinical trials with various combinations for P13Ka-mutated, HR+/HER2- advanced breast cancer, with VAs representing a second indication for which Leerink Partners analyst Andrew Berens forecasts $2.8 billion in peak revenues.

US Supreme Court swats down several biopharma IRA challenges

It looks like the end of the road for many of the court challenges to the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) provision requiring Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices. The U.S. Supreme Court denied cert May 18 to petitions brought by six biopharma companies that raised questions about the constitutionality of the negotiations. All but one of the suits involved were denied in the Third Circuit; the other one was denied in the Second Circuit, so there is no circuit split – yet.

Biopharma deal value reached $79.22 billion in the first quarter (Q1) 2026, marking a strong start to the year and an increase of about 17% from $67.6 billion in Q1 2025 and similar to $78.93 billion in Q4 2025. The total is the highest first-quarter tally in recent years, and the highest quarter since Q4 2025 brought $80.65 billion.
