Prism offers Genentech peptide mimetic small-molecules library for multitarget collaboration

Prism Biolab Co. Ltd. has added Genentech Inc., a unit of Roche Holding AG, to the list of users for its peptide mimetic small-molecules library after signing a multitarget research collaboration and licensing agreement. Under the agreement, Tokyo-based Prism Biolab will open its Pepmetics Library, a library of peptide mimetic small molecules, to screen against targets selected by Roche and Genentech.

Drug, device companies accused of aiding terrorists to face further scrutiny

Be careful who you’re doing business with. That’s the warning the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit sent this week to multinational drug and device companies doing business in terrorist hot spots around the world. Reversing a lower court, the D.C. Circuit cleared the way Jan. 4 for 21 drug and device companies to potentially be held accountable for doing business with Jaysh al-Mahdi terrorists, operating through the Iraqi Ministry of Health, who injured or killed hundreds of U.S. troops and civilians in Iraq.

With its subsidiary, Cell Cure Neurosciences Ltd., Lineage signed an exclusive worldwide collaboration and license pact with Roche and its Genentech arm.

Roche steps away from COVID-19 development deal with Atea

Roche Holding AG is walking away from a deal with Atea Pharmaceuticals Inc. to co-develop the COVID-19 oral antiviral treatment AT-527 after the mid-October failure of a global phase II study testing the medicine in non-hospitalized adults with mild or moderate disease missed its primary endpoint. Roche’s decision tosses the rights and licenses back to Atea so it can continue its development and commercialization efforts.

A more than 20-year uneasy biopharma romance between two Swiss giants will be ending as Novartis AG plans to sell its stake in Roche Holding AG back to Roche for about $20.7 billion. Roche described it as a “disentanglement of the two competitors” that will allow it to regain “full strategic flexibility.” Basel, Switzerland-based Novartis currently owns about one-third of Roche, whose shareholders get the final say-so when they vote yea or nay at the company’s Nov. 26 extraordinary general meeting. Novartis was very clear about how it views its stake in Roche, as the company said it “does not consider the financial investment in Roche as part of its core business and therefore not a strategic asset” and that it’s time to “monetize our investment.”

Ltd. gained FDA clearance for Byooviz (ranibizumab-nuna), a biosimilar that references the VEGF therapy Lucentis (ranibizumab) from Roche Holding AG, as a treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration, macular edema following retinal vein occlusion and myopic choroidal neovascularization. Byooviz is the first ophthalmology biosimilar to win the go-ahead in the U.S., and was approved in the EU on Aug. 18, 2021, followed by the U.K. on Aug. 31, 2021.

Roche strikes $3B+ deal with Adaptimmune to develop cell therapies for cancer

A new deal between Adaptimmune Therapeutics plc and Roche Holding AG's Genentech Inc. aims to develop allogeneic cell therapies for up to five shared cancer targets. Should the agreement win regulatory clearance, still pending, Adaptimmune will receive $150 million up front and additional payments of $150 million over five years. In addition, it could be eligible for development, regulatory and commercial milestones payments from Roche exceeding $3 billion, plus royalties.
