Med-tech M&As on top; deal activity high, but values blurred

A total of 946 med-tech deals so far in 2021 are valued at $537.42 million, which pales in comparison to each of the last three years, although the volume is way ahead, indicating robust activity but a high number of deals with undisclosed terms.

Contrary to the broader markets, BioWorld’s Cancer Index is down by 22% this year, losing more than 7% throughout the month of July, despite oncology driving several high-money deals and accounting for 38%, the lion’s share, of financings. Both the Nasdaq Biotech Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average are tracking similarly for the year, and are up by 13.2% and 15.2%, respectively, as of Aug. 10.

Hutchmed Ltd. has struck a deal for Epizyme Inc.’s anticancer therapy Tazverik (tazemetostat) that could bring the latter up to $310 million. The agreement gives Hutchmed rights to research, develop, manufacture and commercialize Tazverik in greater China, which covers mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

Nihon Kohden Corp. has acquired Advanced Medical Predictive Devices, Diagnostics and Displays Inc. (AMP3D) for an undisclosed sum. The company provides data analytics and artificial intelligence solutions for proactive clinical care. Charlottesville, Va.-based AMP3D owns a large library of clinical predictive algorithms, as well as the Continuous Monitoring of Event Trajectories predictive analytics platform. The latter, a software-as-a-service platform, leverages patients’ continuous monitoring data, vita signs, medical records and laboratory tests to display patients’ risk trajectories, both in current and continuous time.
