Medical device company Know Labs Inc. reported results from a new study showing that continued algorithm refinement combined with more high-quality data significantly increased the accuracy of its Body-Radio Frequency Identification, or Bio-RFID, sensor technology to measure and detect changes in blood glucose levels.

The U.K. government and the health care industry should focus more on behavioral-based approaches and preventative care in a bid to tackle health inequality, rising costs and an ageing population, Anton Derlyatka, CEO and co-founder of Sweatcoin Ltd., told BioWorld. Sweatcoin is a step-counting app that rewards users for their daily steps. The company has worked with the NHS for the last three years and is currently working on pilot programs to help tackle type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases by incentivizing people to move.

To bolster its obesity treatment pipeline, Eli Lilly and Co. is buying Versanis Bio Inc. in a massive cash deal that could reach $1.92 billion. The total amount of the deal includes an up-front payment and development and sales milestone payments. Privately held Versanis, of Boston, brings to Lilly its lead asset bimagrumab, a monoclonal antibody that’s enjoying a resurgence since a failure in treating sarcopenia.

Showing that much lower brand prices are possible, even in the U.S., Theracosbio Inc. announced July 13 that its diabetes drug, Brenzavvy (bexagliflozin), is coming to the U.S. market through the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Co. at a monthly price that’s less than the copay most patients have to pay for other drugs in the class. A new molecular entity approved in January to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes, Brenzavvy is an oral, once-daily sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that will be available through Cost Plus Drugs with a monthly price tag of $47.85, plus shipping and handling. A 30-day supply of other SGLT2 inhibitors costs hundreds of dollars, with some approaching $600 a month.

U.S. FDA clearance of Mobi pumped up Tandem Diabetes Care Inc. on Tuesday. The miniaturized insulin pump is indicated for individuals with diabetes, aged 6 years and up, with the FDA action boosting Tandem’s share price from $26.41 to $29.20 in morning trading before falling back to $27.12 by the end of the day.

More evidence of big pharma’s interest in type 1 diabetes (T1D) arose as Eli Lilly and Co. disclosed its plan to buy encapsulated-cell-therapy collaborator Sigilon Therapeutics Inc., bringing aboard SIG-002, the early-stage drug on which the pair has been working since 2018. The news blasted upward shares of Cambridge, Mass.-based Sigilon (NASDAQ:SGTX), which closed June 29 at $21.15, up $17.24, or 441%.

Two companies presented highlights of studies that demonstrated outstanding results for novel devices at last weekend’s American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) 83rd Scientific Sessions, while Embecta Corp. and Senseonics Holdings Inc. provided updates that position them well for long-term performance. Glyconics Ltd. revealed a fingernail scanning device that simplifies screening for diabetes and Fractyl Health Inc. showed that its Revita procedure reduced blood glucose levels and promoted weight loss.

The recently concluded American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) 83rd Scientific Sessions continued to build powerful use cases for continuous glucose monitors in an ever-wider population and to highlight the value of automated insulin delivery (AID) systems that are getting ever-closer to duplicating the function of a natural pancreas.
