Mutations as well as tumor site predict treatment response in ovarian cancer

Dec. 22, 2022
By Subhasree Nag
Although ovarian cancers appear to be immunologically active, they do not respond well to immunotherapy in the clinic. In a study published on Dec. 14, 2022, in Nature, a multidisciplinary team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) led by Sohrab Shah and Dmitriy Zamarin has uncovered several mechanisms of immune evasion that can help explain why ovarian cancers have been resistant to immunotherapy to date.

NXI Therapeutics reawakens interest in coronin-1 as autoimmune disease target

Dec. 19, 2022
By Cormac Sheridan
Dialing down the immune response remains at the heart of myriad drug development efforts in autoimmune disease. Targeting cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha or interleukin-12 (IL-12) and IL-23, IL-6, or IL-17, or modulating immune cell trafficking by targeting sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor or integrins, are therapeutic mainstays. But chronic immunosuppression and all its attendant safety concerns is the price that many autoimmune disease patients pay to remain in remission.

Microglia are needed to keep neurons healthy

Dec. 19, 2022
By Helen Albert
Research shows that microglia, macrophage cells found in the central nervous system, are needed to maintain nerve health by preventing the degeneration of the myelin sheath that protects neurons. The study, led by the University of Edinburgh and the University of Toronto and published on Dec. 14, 2022, in Nature, showed microglia could be a potential therapeutic target for neurological conditions involving myelin degeneration.

Nitric oxide-modified proteins reveal sex differences in Alzheimer’s

Dec. 19, 2022
By Mar de Miguel
Alzheimer’s disease has a higher incidence in women. This sex difference was associated with a modification of certain proteins of the immune system. According to a recent study, the drop in estrogen with menopause increased the expression in the brain of a neurotransmitter, nitric oxide (NO), generating the S-nitrosylation of complement factor C3 (abbreviated SNO-C3), which activated the microglia.
