Joining a growing number of diagnostics companies mobilizing to minimize the spread of monkeypox, Novacyt SA and Seegene Inc. reported they have developed new polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays to quickly diagnose the disease this week. Roche Holding AG released three monkeypox tests for research use in late May. Abbott Laboratories and Becton Dickinson & Co. have similar plans. Stanford Medicine made its own diagnostic available to its patients last week.
The COVID-19 pandemic completely rewrote the script for government responses to communicable diseases, and thus the Biden administration is wasting no time reacting to the emergence of the monkeypox virus. The administration announced June 28 that it has developed a plan to allocate the distribution of large volumes of vaccines, but the CDC has shipped tests to five major commercial lab companies, thus putting the U.S. on a strong footing to respond to the outbreak.
Megarobo Technologies Ltd. raised $300 million in its series C round financing to develop intelligence and automation solutions for life science companies. The financing was led by Goldman Sachs Asset Management LP, Asia Investment Capital Ltd., and GGV Capital.
A new large-scale study has found combining artificial intelligence (AI) and radiologists to analyze breast cancer screenings can lead to better patient outcomes, when compared with unaided radiologists and the use of AI alone. The study, published in The Lancet Digital Health, evaluated the performance of an AI decision referral system developed by Vara (MX Healthcare GmbH).
A presentation at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2022 annual conference demonstrated that the Dxcover Cancer Liquid Biopsy differentiated between patients with cancer and healthy controls and detected more than 90% of stage I malignancies across a broad range of cancers. Dxcover Ltd. provided more details on its new approach to the search for reliable, rapid screening for multiple malignancies at the 12th International Conference on Clinical Spectroscopy on June 21.
Bipolar disorder (BPD) is disabling, destructive and notoriously difficult to diagnose. Research indicates that up to 40% of patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder or unipolar depression actually have BPD and treating them with antidepressants alone runs an elevated risk of worsening their condition. But the issue is not one-sided: other studies found that 30% to 60% of patients diagnosed with BPD do not meet the clinical criteria for the illness and may be taking powerful mood stabilizers needlessly while failing to receive potentially beneficial therapies.
Glympse Bio Inc.’s diagnostic platform has demonstrated the ability to detect hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in blood, offering a non-invasive method for diagnosing the disease much earlier and more reliably than current approaches. The platform uses biosensors and machine learning to measure protease activity in plasma samples. Details of studies demonstrating the system’s accuracy in HCC will be presented at the International Liver Conference 2022 in London.
