A recent patent application from Laleh Rad, associate professor of Biomedical Engineering and Radiology at Northwestern University, describes the use of machine learning for real-time risk assessment of magnetic resonance imaging in patients with conductive implants for whom tissue heating from radiofrequency excitation fields remains a major concern.
Secondary lymphedema occurs when, after surgery or radiotherapy, the lymphatic system cannot drain interstitial fluid effectively, leading to inflammation and fluid accumulation in the limbs. Previous research has shown that insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) contributes to the promotion of lymphatic remodeling through IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) signaling.
Adrenomedullin, a hormone first identified in an adrenal medullary tumor, disrupts the effect of insulin on the endothelium of blood vessels, leading to insulin resistance linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes. The clue to this discovery lies in a molecular pathway that could be blocked to restore insulin function.
Olix Pharmaceuticals Inc. walked the talk in realizing a new $630 million licensing deal with Eli Lilly and Co. for its cardiovascular and metabolic disease asset, OLX-702A (OLX-75016), rallying stock by 30% after it had largely recovered from a terminated deal with France’s Théa Open Innovation last year.
Novartis AG is paying nearly $1 billion up front to buy privately held Anthos Therapeutics Inc. in a deal that eventually could top out around $3.1 billion. Novartis, coming back to where it started as it and Blackstone Life Sciences founded Anthos in 2019, is entering a crowded space.
Be (not too) still my heart: Kestra Medical Technologies Ltd., maker of a wearable cardioverter defibrillator for patients at high risk of cardiac arrest, filed an S-1 with the U.S. SEC on Feb. 9 to raise $100 million in an IPO. Kestra will be the fourth med-tech company to file for an IPO in 2025, setting a pace well ahead of the last three years. U.s.car
Microglia play a crucial role in neuroinflammation after ischemic brain injury. Previous data have shown that leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B4 (LILRB4) was upregulated in mice after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), but the role it plays here is not well understood. The role LILRB4 plays in ischemic brain injury was thus investigated. LILRB4 expression was measured in mice at different time points after MCAO.
