Gendius CKD technology to be ‘transformative’ for patients and health care systems

Oct. 2, 2023
By Shani Alexander
Following the receipt of a U.K. Conformity Assessed (UKCA) mark for its kidney function diagnostic software, the CKD Screening Prioritizer (CSP), Gendius Ltd. is hoping to soon receive CE mark and then U.S. FDA approval next year. Given that people with type 2 diabetes are at a higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease, Gendius’ pre-screening software will be “transformative” for patients and health care systems, CEO Rory Cameron told BioWorld in an interview.

Dato data lack means upside for Gilead; Padcev 'must-win' does win

Sep. 22, 2023
By Randy Osborne
Upbeat phase III findings outweighed less encouraging late-stage trial news, as big pharma provided a mixed bag of cancer findings – with one data batch to form the basis of global approval bids, as Astrazeneca plc with Daiichi Sankyo Co. Ltd. unveiled interim results from a study called Tropion-Breast01. Targeting trophoblast cell surface antigen 2, datopotamab deruxtecan (dato) hit the mark in progression-free survival for patients with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-low or negative breast cancer in the study called Tropion-Breast01.

Big pharma piles on; Astrazeneca latest to file lawsuit over IRA

Aug. 25, 2023
With the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services soon expected to publish the list of 10 drugs selected for the first round of the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) price negotiations, Astrazeneca plc is the latest to file a challenge. It’s the first non-U.S.-headquartered company to do so and, unlike the other challenges, Astrazeneca’s complaint focuses on the impact to the Orphan Drug Act (ODA). In a statement, the Cambridge, U.K.-based firm said the “drug price negotiation provisions of the IRA run headlong into the goals” of the ODA.

Infant RSV prophylactic scores US win

July 17, 2023
By Mari Serebrov
Sanofi SA and Astrazeneca plc had a lot to celebrate July 17 when the FDA approved Beyfortus (nirsevimab) ahead of schedule, making it the first respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) prophylactic for infants in the U.S. “This is just really an historic day,” Michael Greenberg, a Sanofi vice president and medical head of the company’s North America vaccines unit, told BioWorld. The companies had been expecting the FDA decision later this quarter. The earlier approval suggests the FDA appreciated the urgency of having time for health systems and doctors to get the drug ahead of the next RSV season, Greenberg said.
