Rgenta Therapeutics Inc.’s $52 million in a series A money will let the RNA-focused firm pursue its small-molecule drug efforts “for the next two or three years,” as candidates in cancer and neurology make their ways toward the clinic, said co-founder and CEO Simon Xi. “We’ll go where the science leads us,” he told BioWorld, adding that the cash on hand is sufficient to complete a phase I study.
Cajal Neuroscience Inc., a startup seeking new targets to use in medicines for neurodegeneration, has launched with the completion of a $96 million series A financing led by The Column Group and Lux Capital. The company, inspired by the pioneering work of Santiago Ramón y Cajal, is focused on the "mechanistic, spatial and temporal complexity of neurodegeneration" to determine "how, where and when different mechanisms contribute to disease."
Scientists at USA Elixiria Biotech Inc. and colleagues described data from preclinical studies evaluating the potential of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) agonist, ELB-00824, for protection against chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CINP).
While NASA gets the glory for exploration of the vast unknown of space, Bionaut Labs Ltd. hopes to reap similar fame by transforming travel through the brain with Bionauts, microrobots designed to deliver therapeutic payloads across the blood-brain barrier. To help achieve that mission, the company raised $43.2 million in a series B financing round led by Khosla Ventures.
Axsome Therapeutics Inc.’s AXS-05 (dextromethorphan + bupropion) has notched another success by hitting its phase III primary endpoint in treating a notoriously difficult Alzheimer’s disease (AD) indication when compared to placebo. Newly released data from the Accord study showed AXS-05, an oral, NMDA receptor antagonist with multimodal activity, statistically significantly delayed time to relapse of AD agitation vs. placebo (p=0.014), which was the primary endpoint.
Tuberous sclerosis is a genetic disease caused by loss-of-function mutations in the TSC1 or TSC2 genes. At the neurological level, this rare disease is characterized by benign tumor growth, epilepsy, cognitive deficits and autism. Epilepsy is the main neurological trait and presents mostly as infantile spasms.
Brain insulin signaling is known to control peripheral energy metabolism and regulation of mood and cognition. Dysregulation in this signaling has been tied to brain pathological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Previous findings have reported a strong connection between type 2 diabetes (T2D) and AD, suggesting insulin resistance as a potential risk factor for AD pathology and other forms of dementia.
Researchers from Shanghai Shyndec Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. have detailed the discovery of novel selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)/5-HT1A dual targeting compounds as potential antidepressant candidates.
As many as 3.8 million people experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year in the United States and it is also the strongest environmental risk factor for developing dementia, but there are no treatments to mitigate deficits from TBI.
