IBAT they can: Mirum’s volixibat wins in PBC, PSC validate hope

Optimism on Wall Street proved wise and shares of Mirum Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:MIRM) rose accordingly to close June 17 at $33, up $7.08, or 27.3%, as the firm disclosed interim results from two phase IIb studies evaluating volixibat, an oral ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT) inhibitor, in patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). The drug proved its mettle in both liver biliary tract-stenosing indications, with no new safety signals turning up, Foster City, Calif.-based Mirum said.

Aerovate plunges on phase IIb miss in pulmonary arterial hypertension

Aerovate Therapeutics Inc. is shutting down the ongoing phase III portion of its Impahct study of AV-101, an inhaled version of PDGFR inhibitor imatinib, after reporting top-line data from the phase IIb portion failed to meet primary and secondary endpoints in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It was a major blow for the single-product company, sending shares (NASDAQ:AVTE) falling 93% to close June 17 at $1.65, down $22.97.

The finding was made in in low-grade, intermediate-risk, non-muscle invasive bladder cancer patients who achieved complete response at three months after the first instillation of the drug for intravesical solution.

The good news for Sarepta Therapeutics Inc. is bad news for Pfizer Inc. as the phase III study of its mini-dystrophin gene therapy in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) has missed its primary endpoint.
