The Royal Academy of Engineering in the U.K. is supporting another batch of health care innovations in developing countries, which range from surgical robots to tissue regeneration material. A number of entrepreneurs supported by the Academy’s Leaders in Innovation Fellowships (LIF) Global 2022 program were recently given the additional opportunity to secure further expert mentoring from engineers from the Academy's network and join a peer network of U.K. founders.

Radiopharma Clarity touts advantages of its targeted copper theranostics

Clarity Pharmaceuticals Ltd. is progressing three of its targeted copper theranostics through the clinic that are based on its sarcophagine technology that securely holds copper isotopes inside a cage-like structure, called a chelator. The SAR technology allows a unique pairing of copper isotopes, copper-64  and copper-67, for both cancer diagnosis and therapy.

University of Birmingham spin-off eyes ocular surface disease market

A technology developed at the University of Birmingham, U.K., has been spun off as a potential treatment for ocular surface diseases. The platform technology from startup Healome Therapeutics Ltd. was developed by a team of material scientists at the University’s Healthcare Technologies Institute (HTI) that translates health technology concepts to products for clinical trials.

Satellite Bio goes into orbit with $110M VC funding for bioengineered tissue tech

Satellite Biosciences Inc. has become the latest biotech to emerge from stealth, backed with more than $110 million in VC financing to develop bioengineered tissues that fix damaged tissues or organs. With former Novartis executive Dave Lennon leading as CEO, the Cambridge, Mass.-based company is hoping to find therapies for hard-to-treat diseases.

Pangea Biomed reels in $7M for pan-cancer response predictor

Pangea Biomed Ltd. picked up $7 million in seed financing to fast-track development of its multicancer, multitherapy response predictor Enlight. The platform combines machine learning and RNA sequencing to map tumor molecular signatures and predict how different cancer types will respond to oncology drugs. Pangea said instead of using transcriptomic data, it is utilizing ‘unsupervised’ AI techniques that harvest information about gene interactions.

Oxdx raises funds for pathogen identification technology

LONDON – Oxford University spinout Oxdx Ltd. has raised £2.6 million (US$3.6 million) in pre-seed funding to advance development of a technology for directly identifying infectious pathogens without the need to purify, culture or amplify samples first. The instant testing method uses a mixture of a single universal reagent, high resolution microscopy and machine learning, to identify specific species and strains of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens within minutes.

Med-tech innovations included in The Royal Academy of Engineering’s LIF Global 2022 program

The Royal Academy of Engineering in the U.K. has revealed a new batch of 70 entrepreneurs, including some developers of med-tech solutions, for its Leaders in Innovation Fellowships Global (LIF Global) program. This comes just two months after the LIF Advance edition of the initiative, which had 15 chosen. The selected entrepreneurs will receive equity-free support over the next six months from the training and mentorship program.

Biocaptiva gears up to test DNA capture device in clinical trials

University of Edinburgh spinoff Biocaptiva Ltd. is taking its cell free DNA (cfDNA) capture device to clinical trials in 2022 following promising preclinical results. The company’s platform technology is designed to increase the quantity of cfDNA available for liquid biopsy testing. Current liquid biopsy practices obtain cfDNA via a venous blood draw but the concentration of tumor-derived ctDNA can be too low for comprehensive testing. Biocaptiva’ device emerged from research at the University of Edinburgh investigating liquid biopsy technologies.

Investors have backed a new precision medicine company targeting clonal hematopoiesis with $40 million. Tensixteen Bio Inc. is on a mission to understand how somatic mutations influence age-related diseases, including cancer. The San Francisco-based startup will use the funds to develop a genomics and clinical platform that can identify patients at high risk of developing disease.

Chronus Health raises $22M for portable blood analyzer

Point-of-care (POC) diagnostics startup Chronus Health Inc. reeled in $22 million in a series A round led by Tarsadia Investments. The company plans to use the funds to scale its research, engineering and data science teams and hasten product and technology development. Monta Vista Capital, Sosv and Savantus Ventures also participated in the financings, along with an unidentified strategic investor.
