‘Plant’-ing a stake in Fabry, Protalix regains Balance with positive phase III

The fortunes of Protalix Biotherapeutics Inc. improved dramatically with phase III results from the Fabry disease study called Balance, and a resubmission of the BLA for pegunigalsidase alfa (PRX–102) is planned for the second half of this year. In February, an MAA for PRX-102 was submitted to the EMA.

Sanofi’s Xenpozyme becomes first therapy approved for rare progressive genetic disorder ASMD

Sanofi SA’s enzyme replacement therapy, Xenpozyme (olipudase alfa), has been approved for use in Japan, making it the world’s first and only approved therapy to treat acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD), also known as Niemann-Pick type B disease. Sanofi’s executive vice president and global head of R&D, John Reed, hailed it as a “watershed moment” that was the culmination of 20 years of research.

In top-line data from the Pathway phase III trial with Transcon PTH in hypoparathyroidism, Ascendis Pharma A/S provided “what many have been waiting for: a way of therapy to not only boost serum calcium into the normal range, but to make sure that the kidney issues [are] also handled,” said Aimee Shu, vice president of clinical development in endocrinology and co-director of the study, during a conference call with investors.

Logicbio study placed on clinical hold due to two SAEs in children

The FDA has placed Logicbio Therapeutics Inc.’s phase I/II clinical trial of LB-001, an investigational AAV genome-editing therapy for treating pediatric patients with methylmalonic acidemia (MMA), on a clinical hold. Despite success in other parts of the world, Opko Health Inc. and Pfizer Inc. are still struggling to gain U.S. FDA approval for the recombinant human growth hormone somatrogon in treating pediatric patients, drawing a complete response letter (CRL) with their BLA. The delay caused by the setback gives Skytrofa (lonapegsomatropin) from Ascendis Pharma A/S a chance to charge even further ahead in the pediatric market.

Evotec inks $1B discovery deal with Lilly targeting metabolic disease

LONDON – Evotec SE put the biggest ever headline figure on one of its pharma drug discovery collaborations, announcing a $1 billion deal with Eli Lilly and Co. in metabolic diseases. The Hamburg, Germany-based company will be responsible for the discovery of drug candidates for the treatment of diabetes and chronic kidney disease against targets identified by Lilly or Evotec, or sourced externally. Lily has rights to up to five programs, to be developed in the partnership and to take on any subsequent development, clinical validation and commercialization activities. The collaboration initially runs for three years.
