Researchers from IMEC, the Netherlands’ OnePlanet Research Center in Wageningen, filed for protection of an inexpensive, highly miniaturized ingestible device that may be used for remotely activatable sampling, gut health monitoring and drug delivery.

Despite raising the price of its IPO twice, Caris Life Sciences Inc. left money on the table with a 33% increase in price as soon as trading commenced on the Nasdaq, though no one is squawking about raising nearly $500 million. Researchers have identified KpsM as a virulence factor in Escherichia coli that was responsible for liver damage in alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH). A small-molecule inhibitor of KpsM reduced liver damage in animal models of AH.

Johnson & Johnson’s Medtech division reported the completion of the first cases in the clinical trial for the Ottava robotic surgical system. The cases mark the first clinical experience with the Ottava system, which has been a long time in development.

Transplanting an animal organ into a human is now a closer reality following the successful xenotransplantation of a genetically modified pig liver into a patient diagnosed with brain death in China. The operation was intended to evaluate organ function over a 10-day period. This is a complex experimental trial that did not involve removing the patient's liver and still requires further study. However, the positive preclinical results suggest this strategy could save the lives of those waiting for a human organ, at least in certain cases.
